The Power of Enrichment Programs for Kids & Schools
By: Aaron Locks, NAofA Founder and CEO
As someone who has spent my entire adult life helping kids learn life skills through youth sports, I can say with absolute certainty that after-school activities and enrichment programs are more important now than ever. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic left children not only struggling academically but also facing significant delays in social and emotional development. While research suggests it may take up to three years for students to catch up academically, the more alarming reality is that it could take as long as eight years for them to fully recover socially and emotionally.
Why Enrichment Programs Matter Now More Than Ever
Before the pandemic, kids naturally developed social skills through everyday interactions—playing outside with friends, navigating playground dynamics, and participating in school activities. But after prolonged periods of isolation, screen dependency, and limited social engagement, many kids are finding it harder to connect, communicate, and work collaboratively. Enrichment programs offer a structured yet fun environment where children can rebuild these crucial skills.
- Encouraging Social Growth – Team sports, drama clubs, debate teams, and other group-based activities teach kids how to work together, resolve conflicts, & support each other. These experiences create friendships and strengthen interpersonal skills that will serve them throughout their lives.
- Building Confidence Through Experience – Whether a child is stepping onto a soccer field for the first time or performing in front of an audience, enrichment programs provide safe spaces for kids to take chances & push beyond their comfort zones. Every challenge they overcome builds confidence.
- Enhancing Emotional Resilience – Activities that require perseverance, problem-solving, and adaptability help children develop emotional intelligence & resilience. They learn how to handle setbacks, manage stress, and celebrate both individual and team accomplishments.
- Fostering Independence & Accountability – Whether in martial arts, chess, or robotics, enrichment programs teach kids responsibility. They learn the importance of showing up, being prepared, and putting in the effort to improve their skills. They have the chance to learn to fail fast and fail forward. Growth is always the goal.
Expanding Access Through Strategic Partnerships
The Role of Parents & Educators
Parents and educators play a crucial role in ensuring that kids take advantage of these programs. In a world where screens often dominate free time, it’s important for adults to encourage kids to step away from their devices and engage in meaningful activities. Many parents are recognizing this need & actively seeking programs that will help their children develop life skills beyond academics.
Commitment to Affordable, Quality Programming for Youth
As I reflected on my own childhood, I was reminded of the impact my school’s enrichment programs had on me. I made so many friends and was exposed to so many opportunities that I never would have had if not for the after-school enrichment programs offered at my elementary school. This experience shaped who I am today, and has driven my passion to ensure that children everywhere have access to the same opportunities.
A Call to Action: Get Kids Involved
Every child deserves the opportunity to be part of something bigger than themselves. Whether through sports, creative arts, or academic clubs, enrichment programs provide a foundation for lifelong success. As a society, we must continue advocating for and investing in these opportunities to ensure that kids not only recover from the past few years but emerge stronger, more confident, and better prepared for the future.
So, what can you do? If you’re a parent, encourage your child to try something new. If you’re an educator, advocate for more enrichment opportunities in your school. If you’re a community member, support local programs that help kids thrive.
