The Importance of Kids Playing Recreational Sports

In a world increasingly focused on competition and specialization, the significance of recreational sports often takes a back seat. However, the benefits of engaging in recreational sports are profound and extend far beyond the immediate thrill of the game. In this blog, we explore the importance of recreational sports, distinguishing them from club or travel sports, and shed light on the potential negative effects that intense competition can have on the holistic development of youth.

Recreational Sports: A Foundation for Lifelong Activity

Recreational sports provide a gateway to physical fitness and well-being without the intense pressure and commitment associated with competitive sports. Unlike club or travel sports, recreational activities are centered around enjoyment, fostering a love for physical activity that can last a lifetime. This approach encourages a more inclusive participation, accommodating varying skill levels and preferences. NAofA Founder and CEO Aaron Locks said, “I hear all the time that kids have changed. I say we parents have changed… We need to go back to allowing our kids to play every sport for the love of playing, allow them to fail and trust the process.”

Holistic Development Over Specialization

While club and travel sports may offer an avenue for honing specific skills and pursuing excellence in a particular discipline, recreational sports prioritize holistic development. Engaging in a variety of activities helps young individuals explore their interests, develop a diverse skill set, and discover their own passions, all of which contribute to a more well-rounded personality. “Ensuring that young athletes have the skills, strength training, and confidence to enjoy healthy levels of physical activity is critical,” said National Athletic Trainers’ Association President Kathy Dieringer, EdD, a licensed and certified athletic trainer. “Research shows that waiting to specialize and playing multiple sports during childhood is linked to higher achievement and lower injury risk across most sports.”

Reducing Performance Pressure

One notable distinction between recreational and competitive sports lies in the level of performance pressure. Club and travel sports often involve rigorous training schedules, intense competition, and the pursuit of scholarships or professional opportunities. In contrast, recreational sports allow youth to enjoy the game without the burden of constant evaluation, fostering a healthier relationship with physical activity.

Maintaining a Balanced Lifestyle

Intense club or travel sports commitments can sometimes lead to burnout, fatigue, and even injuries among young athletes. Recreational sports, with their emphasis on enjoyment and variety, promote a balanced lifestyle. This balance is essential for the overall well-being of youth, preventing physical and mental exhaustion that can result from overcommitment to a single sport.

Building Social Connections

Recreational sports provide a social platform for individuals of varying skill levels and interests to come together. The emphasis on fun and camaraderie fosters positive social interactions, teamwork, and the development of lasting friendships. In contrast, the hyper-competitive nature of club and travel sports may inadvertently isolate those who don’t meet stringent performance standards.

Negative Effects of Intense Competition:

While club and travel sports have their merits, it’s crucial to acknowledge potential negative effects on youth:

  1. Burnout and Overuse Injuries: The relentless pursuit of excellence can lead to physical and emotional burnout, and overuse injuries are more common among athletes who specialize in a single sport from a young age. According to a study conducted by the University of Wisconsin, 46% of growing athletes who specialized in a single sport suffered a lower-body injury, nearly twice the 24% rate for kids who played multiple sports while they were still growing.
  2. Academic Stress: Intensive training schedules can sometimes conflict with academic responsibilities, putting additional stress on young athletes.
  3. Limited Socialization: The intense nature of club or travel sports may limit social interactions with a specific group, hindering the development of diverse social skills.

In the quest for well-rounded and resilient individuals, recreational sports play an indispensable role. By fostering a love for physical activity, encouraging holistic development, and promoting a balanced lifestyle, recreational sports provide a foundation for a lifetime of health and happiness. While competitive sports have their place, it’s essential to strike a balance that prioritizes the overall well-being of youth, allowing them to thrive both on and off the field.

NA of A is filled with great mentors, and coaches. It truly makes me feel positive knowing the culture here has an impact on our players enhancing their skillset, mindset and overall health. Na of A especially makes it easier for me as a coach for when I am provided with all the proper equipment and gear to ensure the children/players have everything they need in order to play hard and have fun!

Aaron and his team are absolutely top notch and have a genuine passion for teaching kids’ valuable life skills through sports and play. They’ve developed a program that fills the gap in many communities for youth sports that isn’t focused on hardcore competition and crazy travel schedules. You’re awesome. Great job NAofA!

NAofA organized a Pickleball Camp in San Anselmo summer of 2025. My son and his friend attended and had a terrible experience. Due to this and the icky response from the owner of the camp, I highly recommend avoiding it.
First, while we
were told to arrive at 8:45, on the first day but the instructor arrived at 9. I called to inform the office and the owner (Ben) about the missing instructor, he told me that he would call her to find out what was the matter (she showed up not only after to let us all into the court). When I wrote to him and mentioned the lateness as part of the reason we would not be returning, he surprised me by retorting that he had “proof” she wasn’t late- until I reminded him about my phone call to him.
They have a “password” system to protect the kids, but the instructor hands you the pickup form when you arrive (which has the code written on it) so it’s pointless. Furthermore, When I arrived to pick up my kid, the instructor was rushing off to try and get a couple of the kids who had left the court entirely on their own.
My son and his friend were bullied by another kid throughout the day. Despite the “anti bully” policy, the kid was invited back the next day.
The kids told me that no instruction was provided at all about pickleball. They were given balls and rackets and there were no other activities or involvement to keep them engaged. When they asked to take a break because they were hot, the woman told them they had to keep playing. When I informed the owner about this behavior, he retorted that it was their policy and that many kids were “struggling to participate” that day which is why she refused the breaks.
This doesn’t seem like a camp that’s all that motivated to keep kids engaged or having fun, and the defensive/gaslighting responses of the director suggests that it’s not run in a way that promotes safety or fun, or holds its own instructors accountable.
It’s don’t recommend the Pickleball Camp at all, and wouldn’t trust their other programs.
