Is Your Child’s Youth Sports Program Kid-Approved?
Every child experiences sports differently, & as parents, coaches, & caregivers, it’s important to understand where they are in their sports journey. Is your child’s program Kid Approved? A child’s interest in practice & play can vary, & it’s our job to guide them. Here’s a simple color system to help you understand how your child feels about their sport & how to support their growth:
Green: Full Throttle!
When your child is in the green zone, they’re asking to practice & excited to play! They’re developing a love for the sport & eager to improve. Encourage them! Provide opportunities to grow, build confidence, & keep the momentum going. Let them enjoy every moment!
Yellow: Room for Growth
In the yellow zone, your child may not love every practice, but they’re still looking forward to the games! They enjoy the social aspects of sports. This is a great time to make practices more fun & engaging with challenges or skill-building games to keep them interested.
Red Flag: Is It Time for a Break?
If your child is in the red zone, they may not want to play in games. This could mean they’re burned out, frustrated, or not enjoying the sport. Check-in with them to understand their feelings. It may be time for a break or to explore another sport. Remember, the goal is to inspire a love for the game, not force it.
“Your child’s athletic ability & prowess is not a direct reflection of how good a parent you are.” Aaron Locks, NAofA Founder and CEO
What’s the Lesson?
Focus on fundamentals and fun—helping your child develop skills while enjoying the sport is key to fostering a lifelong love for it. Encourage confidence by providing positive reinforcement, creating a supportive environment, and celebrating their progress at every stage. Patience is key—every child’s sports journey is unique, and it’s okay if they don’t start off all in. Their interest and enthusiasm may evolve over time, and our role is to nurture that growth.
Above all, remember that sports should be a positive experience. The goal isn’t just to win games but to develop resilience, teamwork, and a love for movement. Understanding where your child is on their sports journey and supporting them accordingly, you help lay the foundation for an active, healthy, and fulfilling relationship with sports. Let them lead the way, and be there to guide, encourage, and celebrate the journey with them!
