Making Each Day Count

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s easy to get caught up in the chaos and lose sight of what truly matters. With the demands of certain jobs, or wanting to reach that next step in your career, it can be hard to achieve a work-life balance. NAofA Founder and CEO, Aaron Locks shares a daily practice that has helped him and many others feel that each day has meaning. By taking a moment at the end of each day to reflect on our actions and intentions, we can cultivate a sense of purpose and fulfillment in our lives.

At the core of Aaron’s practice are four questions that prompt introspection and self-awareness:

  1. What did I do today that was productive?
  2. What did I do today that I enjoyed? 
  3. What did I do today for my body/mind/spirit health? 
  4. What did I do today for someone else? 

By consistently asking ourselves these questions, we not only acknowledge our achievements but also become more attuned to our overall well-being and the impact we have on others. As Aaron aptly puts it, “It takes time to change your circumstances, but your attitude can be improved instantly.” This mindset shifts towards abundance, happiness, and love, especially during challenging times, and empowers us to navigate life’s ups and downs with resilience and grace. 

Personal Mission Statement

Crafting a personal mission statement is another powerful tool for guiding our actions and aspirations. A meaningful personal mission statement comprises two essential elements. First, it outlines what you aim to achieve and the contributions you want to make. Second, it articulates the character strengths and qualities you aspire to embody and develop.

 “If something is important enough you should try, even if the probable outcome is failure.” Elon Musk 

“To make people happy.” Walt Disney 

Creating Your Own Mission Statement: 

This is a highly personal endeavor, and while there’s no foolproof formula for it, we can start here: 

What kind of value are you generating? 

For whom are you creating this value? 

What outcome do you anticipate? 

When you pass, why will people remember you? 

What is the challenge you see in the world? 

What are you intending to fix? 

Why are you doing what you are doing? 

What past experiences make you passionate about the future? 

What would the best version of yourself look like? 

What personal traits do you admire and want to embrace?

Creating a personal mission statement is crucial because it serves as a compass in life’s journey, guiding individuals toward their true purpose and passions. By articulating their values, goals, and aspirations, individuals gain clarity and focus, enabling them to make decisions aligned with their deepest beliefs. A mission statement provides a sense of direction, empowering individuals to navigate challenges with resilience and determination. It serves as a constant reminder of what truly matters, fostering a sense of meaning and fulfillment in both personal and professional endeavors. Creating a personal mission statement is a transformative process that empowers individuals to live with intention, authenticity, and purpose. Creating a personal mission statement can help you achieve work-life balance by allowing you to see who you want to be and what you do inside and outside of your career. 

Make Yourself Valuable to Your Work 

In addition to setting intentions, making ourselves valuable to our work and community is essential for personal and professional growth. “If you spend too much time learning the tricks of the trade, you rarely learn the trade,” said Coach John Wooden.

  1. Understand Your Role: Understand your job duties, goals, and what’s expected. If unsure, ask your supervisor or team for clarity. 
  2. Continuous Learning: Stay informed about industry trends and tools. Attend trainings and workshops to improve your skills. 
  3. Efficient Time Management: Manage your time, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines consistently. Being organized boosts productivity and reliability. 
  4. Proactive Problem-Solving: Anticipate challenges and address them proactively. Offer solutions and suggestions for improvement, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills. 
  5. Collaboration and Communication: Build good relationships with colleagues, and community stakeholders and communicate well. Work together, share ideas, and contribute positively to team discussions and meetings. 
  6. Value-Added Contributions: Go the extra mile in your job. Take on more tasks, suggest new ideas, and contribute to projects that match your interests and skills.
  7. Adaptability: Stay flexible and open to change. Approach new tasks and challenges positively, with a desire to learn and improve. 
  8. Results-Oriented Approach: Focus on achieving goals and producing results. Monitor your progress, evaluate your performance, and aim for excellence in your work. 
  9. Consistent Effort: Give your best effort every day, whether it’s expected or not. 
  10. Alignment: Align your work with the organization’s goals, mission, and values. 

By embodying these principles, we not only excel in our endeavors but also contribute to a thriving and supportive environment.

Self Peace 

Self-peace is another vital aspect of personal growth, emphasizing gratitude as a pathway to inner calm, resilience, and contentment.

  1. Enhance Relationships: Gratitude strengthens connections and fosters trust. 
  2. Improve Mental Well-being: Cultivating gratitude promotes positivity and reduces stress. 
  3. Increase Resilience: Gratitude helps in facing challenges with a positive attitude. 
  4. Boost Productivity: Staying grateful enhances motivation and creativity. 
  5. Promote Physical Health: Gratitude is linked to better sleep and a stronger immune system.
  6. Foster Happiness: Gratitude increases life satisfaction and happiness. 
  7. Inner Calm: Gratitude leads to inner peace and tranquility. 
  8. Contentment: Gratitude brings happiness and joy in simple things. 
  9. Acceptance: Gratitude includes accepting oneself fully. 
  10. Emotional Balance: Gratitude helps in achieving emotional resilience. 

By fostering gratitude in our daily lives, we cultivate a positive mindset that enriches our relationships, enhances our productivity, and promotes holistic wellness.

Add Value and Make a Difference 

Ultimately, the true measure of our lives lies in the value we add and the difference we make in the world. Be someone who makes a positive difference and adds value to the world. 

As Nelson Mandela said, “It is in your hands, to make a better world for all who live in it.” 

Here are some ways to add value and make a difference: 

  1. Empathy and Compassion: Show genuine concern for others’ wellbeing, understand their feelings, and offer support when needed. 
  2. Positive Impact: Strive to make a positive difference in people’s lives, whether it’s through small acts of kindness or larger efforts to improve communities or organizations. 
  3. Continuous Learning and Improvement: Stay curious, open-minded, and committed to personal and professional growth. Seek opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills.
  4. Effective Communication: Listen actively, communicate clearly and respectfully, and foster healthy relationships built on trust and understanding. 
  5. Problem-Solving and Innovation: Approach challenges with a proactive mindset, seek innovative solutions, and be willing to adapt and learn from failures. 
  6. Value Creation: Focus on creating value for others, whether it’s through your work, interactions, or contributions to your community. Prioritize adding meaningful value to everything you do. 
  7. Ethical Integrity: Maintain high ethical standards, act with honesty and integrity, and uphold principles of fairness and justice with your actions and decisions.

Na of A especially makes it easier for me as a coach for when I am provided with all the proper equipment and gear to ensure the children/players have everything they need in order to play hard and have fun!

NAofA organized a Pickleball Camp in San Anselmo summer of 2025. My son and his friend attended and had a terrible experience. Due to this and the icky response from the owner of the camp, I highly recommend avoiding it.
First, while we
 were told to arrive at 8:45, on the first day but the instructor arrived at 9. I called to inform the office and the owner (Ben) about the missing instructor, he told me that he would call her to find out what was the matter (she showed up not only after to let us all into the court). When I wrote to him and mentioned the lateness as part of the reason we would not be returning, he surprised me by retorting that he had “proof” she wasn’t late- until I reminded him about my phone call to him.
They have a “password” system to protect the kids, but the instructor hands you the pickup form when you arrive (which has the code written on it) so it’s pointless. Furthermore, When I arrived to pick up my kid, the instructor was rushing off to try and get a couple of the kids who had left the court entirely on their own.
My son and his friend were bullied by another kid throughout the day. Despite the “anti bully” policy, the kid was invited back the next day.
The kids told me that no instruction was provided at all about pickleball. They were given balls and rackets and there were no other activities or involvement to keep them engaged. When they asked to take a break because they were hot, the woman told them they had to keep playing. When I informed the owner about this behavior, he retorted that it was their policy and that many kids were “struggling to participate” that day which is why she refused the breaks.
This doesn’t seem like a camp that’s all that motivated to keep kids engaged or having fun, and the defensive/gaslighting responses of the director suggests that it’s not run in a way that promotes safety or fun, or holds its own instructors accountable.
It’s don’t recommend the Pickleball Camp at all, and wouldn’t trust their other programs.
