April: National Youth Sports Safety Month

April is National Youth Sports Safety Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of safety in youth athletics. Sports provide kids with countless benefits, from building confidence and teamwork to improving physical health and social skills. However, ensuring their safety while playing is just as important as the game itself.

The Importance of Sports Safety

Each year, millions of children participate in organized sports, and while these activities promote healthy lifestyles, they also come with risks. According to the CDC, over 3.5 million children under the age of 14 receive treatment for sports-related injuries annually. Many of these injuries are preventable with proper precautions, education, and training.

Common Youth Sports Injuries

While bumps and bruises are expected in any athletic endeavor, some of the most common youth sports injuries include:

  • Sprains and strains – Often caused by overuse or improper stretching.
  • Fractures – Resulting from falls or direct contact.
  • Concussions – A growing concern, especially in contact sports like football, soccer, and basketball.
  • Heat-related illnesses – Due to dehydration and prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

How to Keep Young Athletes Safe

Keeping kids safe on the field requires a team effort between parents, coaches, and athletes. Here are some key steps to improve safety in youth sports:

1. Encourage Proper Warm-Ups and Cool-Downs

Stretching and warming up before playing can help prevent strains and injuries. Cooling down after activity reduces muscle stiffness and aids in recovery.

2. Use the Right Equipment

Ensure that children wear properly fitted protective gear, including helmets, mouthguards, shin guards, and appropriate footwear, depending on the sport.

3. Stay Hydrated and Avoid Overheating

Dehydration and heat exhaustion can be dangerous. Encourage athletes to drink plenty of water before, during, and after games and practices.

4. Know the Signs of a Concussion

Coaches and parents should recognize the symptoms of a concussion, such as dizziness, confusion, headaches, and nausea. Players should be removed from play immediately if a concussion is suspected.

5. Prioritize Rest and Recovery

Overuse injuries are common in young athletes who specialize in a single sport year-round. Encourage kids to take breaks, get enough sleep, and participate in different activities to prevent burnout and overuse injuries.

6. Promote Good Sportsmanship

Teaching kids to play fair and respect their opponents reduces reckless behavior that can lead to injuries. Safe play starts with a culture of respect on and off the field.

National Youth Sports Safety Month is a reminder for everyone involved in youth sports to prioritize safety. Parents, coaches, and organizations can advocate for safer playing environments by:

  • Supporting proper coaching education and certification
  • Encouraging injury prevention programs
  • Promoting positive and inclusive sports experiences

NAofA organized a Pickleball Camp in San Anselmo summer of 2025. My son and his friend attended and had a terrible experience. Due to this and the icky response from the owner of the camp, I highly recommend avoiding it.
First, while we
 were told to arrive at 8:45, on the first day but the instructor arrived at 9. I called to inform the office and the owner (Ben) about the missing instructor, he told me that he would call her to find out what was the matter (she showed up not only after to let us all into the court). When I wrote to him and mentioned the lateness as part of the reason we would not be returning, he surprised me by retorting that he had “proof” she wasn’t late- until I reminded him about my phone call to him.
They have a “password” system to protect the kids, but the instructor hands you the pickup form when you arrive (which has the code written on it) so it’s pointless. Furthermore, When I arrived to pick up my kid, the instructor was rushing off to try and get a couple of the kids who had left the court entirely on their own.
My son and his friend were bullied by another kid throughout the day. Despite the “anti bully” policy, the kid was invited back the next day.
The kids told me that no instruction was provided at all about pickleball. They were given balls and rackets and there were no other activities or involvement to keep them engaged. When they asked to take a break because they were hot, the woman told them they had to keep playing. When I informed the owner about this behavior, he retorted that it was their policy and that many kids were “struggling to participate” that day which is why she refused the breaks.
This doesn’t seem like a camp that’s all that motivated to keep kids engaged or having fun, and the defensive/gaslighting responses of the director suggests that it’s not run in a way that promotes safety or fun, or holds its own instructors accountable.
It’s don’t recommend the Pickleball Camp at all, and wouldn’t trust their other programs.
